Montesinho and Nogueira mountain chains are areas of very low population densities, located in the Northeastern tip of Portugal, classified as a Natural Park (PT). The mosaic of habitats here is dominated by highland pastures (“lameiros”), and Oak, Pine and Chestnut woods. Like Peneda-Gerês area, it also located in the Southern limit of breeding distribution for some European species, like Red-backed Shrike and Ortolan Bunting.
Other interesting breeding species are Montagu’s Harrier, Honey Buzzard, Scops Owl, Wryneck, Great Spotted Cuckoo, European Bee-eater, White-throated Dipper, Rock Thrush, Dartford Warbler or Subalpine Warbler. In winter, temperatures are often bellow zero, with snowfall in higher areas, and most birds seek refuge in lower lands. Municipalities: Vinhais, Bragança IBA: learn more |
