Peneda-Gerês area is the only existent National Park (PT) in Portugal. It is a vast and remote area, of mainly forested mountains, highland plateaus and pastures. Some European species have their Southern breeding distribution limit here, like Northern Wheatear, Whinchat, Song Thrush, Red-backed Shrike, Bullfinch or Yellowhammer. Other interesting breeding species include Montagu’s Harrier, Scops Owl, White-throated Dipper, Rock Thrush, Dartford Warbler and Bonelli’s Warbler. During the Winter the cold and harsh conditions make most of the birds leave the higher regions, but still species like Alpine Accentor can be found. Between June and September a small fee (1,5 €) is required to get into the forested area of “Mata da Albergaria”. Municipalities: Arcos de Valdevez, Melgaço, Montalegre, Ponte da Barca, Terras de Bouro IBA: learn more |
