Ponta do Pargo lies about 50 km from Funchal, and the habitat consists of rocky tall cliffs, with several “fajãs” (coastal platforms), open fields and forested areas. Some interesting species to look for are Pallid Swift, Plain Swift, Berthelot’s Pipit, Spectacled Warbler and Rock Sparrow. It is also a place to visit during migration time, and where some rarities have occurred during the migration season. Porto Moniz is probably the best place for seawatching in Madeira Island, especially during the Autumn migration. By nightfall, Band-rumped Storm Petrel can sometimes be heard calling, for the species breeds nearby. IBA: learn more |
