Pico is the second largest island of the Azores, and Pico mountain is the highest peak in Portuguese territory - rising to 2351m - fact that adds some distinct aspects to the island. The resident birds of Faial are the same as most of the other Azorean islands, with Common Buzzard, Wood Pigeon, Grey Wagtail, Blackbird, Blackcap, European Robin, Goldcrest, Common Starling, Chaffinch and Island Canary being the main species, most of these represented by endemic subspecies to the archipelago. In higher areas Common Snipe, Woodcock and even Wilson’s Snipe are easier to spot than on other islands. Cory’s Shearwater, Little Shearwater, Common Tern and Roseate Tern are some of the breeding seabirds, and the ferry crossings to the nearby islands (Faial and S. Jorge) can provide a good opportunity to watch these and other seabirds. The coastal areas and inland lagoons are the best places to look for waterbirds, possibly many of which of Nearctic provenience. Some of the best birding spots are included in Pico island Natural Park.
