Moura, Mourão, Barrancos
This is an arid and open country area with some Holm Oak and Olive woods, and rocky valleys, situated in the margins of the river Guadiana. Recently the edification of Alqueva dam created the largest artificial reservoir in Europe, and caused massive habitat loss, but provided an opportunity for some waterbirds.
The area is known for its steppe birds, like Great and Little Bustards. This is also probably the best area of Alentejo to spot Black-bellied Sandgrouse. Black-winged Kite, Black Kite, Short-toed and Booted Eagles. Egyptian Vulture and Black Stork are scarce but regular. Some most noteworthy summer visits are Great Spotted Cuckoo, European Roller, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Black-eared Wheatear, Subalpine Warbler and Golden Oriole.
In the deeper rocky valleys of Barrancos area, species like Crag Martin, Blue Rock Thrush, Raven and Rock Bunting can usually be seen.
In the wintertime, the area is probably the best place in the country for Common Crane. Red Kite and Hen Harrier are some of the other winter visitors.
The Alqueva reservoir flooded a huge area of great habitat for open country species like Spectacled Warbler, but brought more adequate conditions for birds like Collared Pratincole and Gull-billed Tern.
