The mountain areas of Madeira can offer the visitor some spectacular views, and are the only known breeding place of the endemic Zino’s Petrel Pterodroma madeira, one of the most endangered seabirds worldwide. This is a vast area North of Funchal (Funchal Ecological Park) to Areeiro Peak, the highest peak of the island - rising to 1818 meters. Landscape is composed by streams and irrigation channels (“Levadas”), Laurel forest patches, endemic highland vegetation, mountain plateaus and rocky peaks. You can visit the area in organized tours provided by the Zino’s Petrel Centre of the Madeira Natural Parks service. Other interesting species to look for are the elusive Madeiran Sparrowhawk, Plain Swift, Berthelot´s Pipit, Madeiran Firecrest and Rock Sparrow. Municipalities: Funchal IBA: learn more |
