Douro Internacional and Vale do Águeda
In the Northeast of Mainland Portugal, the core of Douro Internacional is a wide and rocky valley, where the river Douro runs along the border of the two Iberian countries. The landscape is dramatic, and the cliffs are firstly surrounded by scrubland, and then by a mixture of pastures, agricultural fields, and patches of woodland. The area is classified as Douro Internacional Natural Park (PT)
The ornithological “flag” of Douro valley is the diversity and abundance of soaring birds, some with a highly localized distribution in Portugal. It is one of the most important areas in the country for Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Black Stork, Red Kite, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles. Other specialities include Great Spotted Cuckoo, Alpine Swift, European Bee-eater, Orphean Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Golden Oriole and Red-billed Chough. The area is also one of the last strongholds of Black Wheatear, nowadays rare in the country.
The valleys of Águeda and upper Coa rivers are also very rich in soaring birds and Mediterranean species. Close to village of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Faia Brava Natural Reserve is managed by a local NGO (ATN - Associação Transumância e Natureza), and is worth a visit. In the reserve there are some pedestrian trails and a hide, which can provide great opportunities to watch and photograph some of the local birds.

Municipalities: Mogadouro, Miranda do Douro, Freixo de Espada à Cinta e Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo
