Here you can find more detailed information on some of the main birdwatching sites in Portugal. Of course there are many great areas for birdwatching in the country, which makes it difficult to choose only some of them to include in this section. We selected 36 sites (18 in mainland Portugal, 9 in Madeira archipelago and another 9 in the Azores islands). Most of these sites correspond to one or more IBAs (Important Bird Areas). In the Azores, each location corresponds to an island.

For each one of these birdwatching hotspots you will find links to the municipalities the sites are located and associated IBAs, and information on selected target-species, per hotspot, with associated calendar of presence, detailed maps indicating the main birding sites, and a brief description of the area. Regarding the target-species, we opted not to make an exhaustive list of birds that can be found in a particular spot. Instead we selected some of the most appealing species for most birdwatchers, which can regularly occur in the area, and be sighted with relative ease. These species were chosen from a previously elaborated list of target-species for the country. |
